DEEP PHARYNGEAL NEUROMUSCULAR STIMULATION PROGRAM (DPNS) is a therapeutic program that restores muscle strength and reflexes within the pharynx (throat) for improved efficient swallow function. DPNS has shown that the more stimulation input via multiple cranial nerve tracks, within the pharynx, improves swallow function significantly.

DPNS treatment is indicated for the following Patients:

Stroke patients (right, left, brainstem, and bilateral)
Mild/Moderate stages of MS
Mild/Moderate stages of Parkinson’s disease
Age related neuromuscular insufficiency
Dysphagia with esophageal reflux
Alzheimer’s disease (non-combative) through Stage 6
Closed head injury on successful seizure control (6 months minimal) ROOM TEMPERATURE PROBES ONLY

Procedure:

Dysphagia evaluation to be completed to determine oral (mouth) and pharyngeal (throat) impairments.
Explanation of treatment techniques and patient sensations/responses.
Explanation of intensive treatment.
Frozen swabs removed from freezer.
Frozen swabs are placed in various areas of the mouth and throat, 1 swab at a time, with an appropriate progression with techniques.
Dispensing of swabs in appropriate container/bag.

Benefits observed by the Patient:

Improved re-directive/reflexive cough
Improved phlegm/saliva management
Improved vocal quality
Generalized sensation that pharyngeal muscles are “stronger” or “feel better”
